Kounel 11, 2018

Kounel 11, 2018 (Excerpt from Kounel Issue 11, 2018) Kuh Kintsugi Workshop, which also holds exhibitions. Ms. Kazue Itoh started kintsugi 20 years ago. At that time, there were no specialized classes, so she learned at an antique shop in Nihonbashi. After that, she started a restaurant, and while using the repaired vessels from the restaurant, customers asked her to teach them. Over the past 18 years, she has produced many students who are now active as potters or other craftsmen who use kintsugi techniques. She says that she started with a sense of art, but “the star of the show is the food. The ideal way to show the kintsugi is to make the inside of the dish shine, and if you look closely, you can see that the kintsugi has been amended to make it look like the main dish. My role is to teach them how to mend it beautifully without making it stand out,” she says. Every year, she holds a group exhibition where she sells her students’ works. He says, “It’s a fun way to give the vessels I mended to strangers. It would be wonderful if those vessels could fly across the ocean to […]

Kuh’s “Kin Kintsugi” to reborn the Life of Vessels

Mending with the “spirit of caring” and the “spirit of playing”. With wisdom and technique, you can enjoy another scenery and view. Why don’t you reborn your precious vessels that have been cracked or chipped by mending them with gold? Kintsugi ( “golden joinery”), also known as Kintsukuroi (” golden repair”), is the Japanese art of repairing broken vessel by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold or silver. It would be wasteful to throw away an important and thoughtful vessel just because it is chipped. Also, it is a great pleasure when your favorite vessel is revived with gold makeup. The charm of “Kintsugi” is that you can enjoy the different appearance of the vessel before it is broken. Step 1. Determine the type of crack. There are five types of cracks. The first thing to do is to determine the type of crack. This discernment is important because it determines the next step. If the pieces are scattered(Ware), the first step is to put them back together like a puzzle. If they are cracked(Nyu or Hibiware), the next step is to fill in the gaps.
